When thoroughbred foal Ollie’s mother died just hours after giving birth, it was a race against time to save him too. Breeders Lesley and Bernard Allen gave Ollie a special formula milk but it didn’t agree with him and he deteriorated quickly.
‘In desperation we thought about trying him on goats’ milk, we had nothing to loose as he was close to death’s door.’ comments Lesley.
‘We’re pleased to say he is now thriving at 7 weeks old and drinking 15 litres of goats’ milk a day! He gets really excited when we go into his stable and he sees the blue carton of Delamere Dairy goats’ milk. The threads on the carton spout mean we can screw the teat on and he drinks it straight from the bottle carton – he won’t have it any other way! Goats’ milk truly has been a lifesaver for us!
‘Goats’ milk is a very digestible, nutritious food for animals and humans alike’, comments Roger Sutton, Joint Managing Director at Delamere Dairy, the UK’s leading supplier of goats’ milk products. ‘Breeders of dogs and cats have been using it for years, because they recognise the benefits it brings. This is not the first time we have heard of foals being reared on goats’ milk. Humans with allergies or intolerances to cows’ milk can also benefit from a switch to goats’ milk. It’s just as nutritious as cows’ milk, but more easily digestible.’
Delamere Dairy has developed products especially for dogs, puppies and kittens under its Top Life Formula brand. With a highly digestible goats’ milk base, the milks contain added ingredients and vitamins to promote the animal’s health and well-being. ‘Perhaps Top Life Formula for horses should be the next new product on our agenda!’ adds Roger.
