Charlene Thomas - GB 1500m athlete

Meet Charlene...

Delamere Dairy is pleased to support GB 1500m athlete Charlene Thomas who also happens to be a massive fan of Delamere Dairy's goats' milk since she found it helps alleviate her asthma. Here we asked her a few questions about her training routine...

Do you eat any specific foods before a race?

Due to competing internationally and staying in different hotels, I try not to be too reliant on a certain pre race meals. I prefer to have boiled eggs on toast to provide me with all the good fats, protein and carbohydrates that I need.

Do you have any pre race rituals?

Not specifically, no. I do take my Delamere soft toy goat as my lucky charm everywhere with me though, does that count?!

Where's your favourite place to race?

I really enjoyed competing in the Berlin Olympic stadium when I competed there in 2009, representing GB at the World Championships. Closer to home I love competing at the Trafford AC track in Stretford at the British Milers Club meetings.

Interview continued...

Which athlete do you most admire?

I admire most of the GB endurance athletes. My good friend Helen Clitheroe continues to inspire me and 1500m athletes Hannah England and Lisa Dobriskey are also great athletes. I also really enjoy watching Christine Ohuruogu (GB 400m runner) compete at major champs. It's inspiring how she peaks at the right time, running her season best performance in the final.

What inspired you to start running?

I was fortunate enough to have a PE teacher at school who was really keen on athletics. I fell in love with the sport and also having a natural talent for it was a bonus! It wasn't until my family were posted back to the UK from RAF Laarbruch in Germany that I joined my first athletics club, Ipswich Harriers aged 14.

What is the longest amount of time you can sit still for?

Elite athletes can actually be quite lazy! I'm normally exhausted from training twice a day so I try to rest as much as possible. I keep asking my current place of part time work - The Coach House Sports Physiotherapy Clinic - to have a chair lift fitted so I don't have to walk up the stairs!

What is your favourite song to train to?

My favourite warm up track last season was a song by Jay Z that was exactly 4 minutes and 3 seconds in length, which is my Personal Best for the 1500m! I'll need one that is sub 4 minutes for the 2014 season!

Final random question...what's your favourite sandwich filling?

I'm a big fan of egg mayonnaise, but at the moment I am really enjoying ham and Delamere's spreadable goats' cheese!!
