Keeping up with the Jones

The Jones’ supply Delamere with goats milk from their farm in Gloucestershire, Pella Farm is a typical third generation family run farm. Gerald and Jean Jones work alongside their son Paul and his wife Ioana on the 150 acre farm. Before venturing into goats, the farm was organic status, milking a herd of 100 cows. When organic farming didn’t work they decided to make big changes and invested heavily in goats. Today they have over 1300 goats and after 4 years and a lot of hard work, they feel confident that there is a promising future with goats’ milk.

We asked Paul Jones a few common questions our customers often have about farming goats.

What is the best thing about farming goats?
The best has to be the new born, call me soft but they are funny little things. We like to leave the kids with their mothers for as long as possible, so that they get the best possible start in life.

What is the worst thing about farming goats?
The worst has to be keeping all the goat’s feet healthy, every goat has four feet, so it takes a long time to check and trim every foot. We even give them a foot bath twice a month!

What would I say to someone that buys goats milk?
People who are not familiar with goats’ milk often can think it is odd to drink it, when they have only ever drunken cows’ milk before. Though I know a lot of people that do drink it and would never go back to cows’ milk. It’s a natural healing remedy that works. It’s that simple.
